Do you have to earth the main incoming water pipe, back to the main consumer unit, if the pipe is blue plastic
In my house I had a new water main installed using the new blue plastic pipe. When I had the electrics tested, the electrician failed it because he said that the water pipe should be bonded to the main earth in the consumer unit. I told him it is a plastic pipe and so does it really need bonding ? He said he would find out and phone back, of course he never did.
The rest of the copper water pipes are bonded together at the boiler. Would it be possible to just connect a 10mm earth cable from the nearest copper water pipe to the consumer unit main earth ?
Hi I am an electrician ,To comply with the current edition of the wiring regs you should have a bond from your consumer unit to the metal pipework on the consumer side of the stop tap not on the other side which in your case is plastic anyway, the connection should be within 300 mm of the stop tap and before any branches or joints the size of the bonding cable depends on the size of the incoming mains but generally 10 mm will be OK for a domestic system .For the sake of safety any point on the pipework could be connected to your consumer unit but it is better in that first 300 mm .Hope this helps
