The golden era of the 70s and the 80s would be synonymous for bringing into life new outfits and style statements in to foray. The designs were innovative and almost instantly touched the hearts of lots of people. The fashion had changed very rapidly during those years. The emergence of MTV dramatically changed music industry, fashion and anything it can be related to. In these years everyone has tried to redefine and also have adapted to sudden changes among both men and women.
Tight shirts with loose pants were in fashion in 70's. In 80's the fashion almost inverted itself. Women began to wear bolder dresses with shoulder pads. Men began wearing full sleeve shirts made out of expensive fabric with baggy loose trousers which were tapered at the ankle joint. Former punks introduced the Romantic Movement with designer clothes. Designer jeans and "leather in clothing" also began to emerge as hot trends which soon caught up.
Women had adapted wearing high heel pointed shoes as business wear & jelly shoes that were transparent and came in glossy colours as party wear. Tracksuits and jog-pants turned leisure wear in this era. Music bands with tattooed and pierced bodies and faded, acid washed jeans became extremely popular. It was considered stylish for men who wore earrings. The hair looked shiny with volume for which mousse was used a lot in those times. The teenagers had a fancy for crimped hair with streaks of contrasting colour. Men kept longer hair and women kept short hair.
The precious gems studded jewellery was regarded synonymous with status. It represented power and wealth. Women used unusual long earrings which often weren't matching and sometimes they'd wear just one earring. Chains made of gold and silver, punk style and bright colors in jewellery arrived to fashion. Jewellery with enamel and modern shapes were chosen over the old styled jewellery. Through the early 80s digital watches with metal bands were quite a trend among the youth. Subsequently adults reverted back to dial watches. But teens still choose to wear dynamically colored plastic watches with roman numerals. The Movado design was a status symbol featuring a sleek design plus a dot at 12. Sometimes people also wore several wrist watches on a single wrist together with hoop earrings and gold bracelets.
Further, the buzz included leather designer bags, clutch bags for their compactness & attractiveness and briefcases. Women were accustomed to match their shoe colour with that of their bags. Shawls in several variety & colours were worn on different events like in day time with tank tops and at night with gowns. Designer under garments made waves in this period. Women used light colored, laced panties. Men preferred vibrant colored boxer shorts. Small glasses with metal frames became a rage over these days. However round and small glasses continued to be common in the entire 80's. Fashion had heavy impact on everyday living of those years.
